Scene

By Chris Ramirez

My fire pager sits on the floor next to the bed. When it goes off it has this piercing tone that just means bad. I think my heart hears it even before my eyes open. A couple of deep breaths as the dispatcher speaks slowly and you begin to paint a picture of what you may be asked to do. This is what I signed up for. I enjoy photographing firefighting efforts as much as firefighting itself; however, I have learned you cannot do both at the same time. My duty as a firefighter comes first. With heart and dedication, Devon Chester, along with his brother and sister firefighters of the fire department in Rock Hill, NY, responded to this barn fire in the spring.
